Lenin Peak, known as Mount Kaufmann until 1928, is the highest mountain in the Trans-Alay Range of Central Asia and the second highest peak in the Pamir Mountains, exceeded only by Ismail Samani Peak (=Peak Communism) (7,495m). It stands on the border of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan; it is the second-highest point of both countries. It is also sometimes referred to as "Achiktash". In 1928 the mountain was renamed after the Russian revolutionary and first leader of the Soviet Union, Vladimir Lenin. The peak was renamed again in July 2006. But there are conflicting reports about the peak's new correct name. The name Independence Peak (=Qullai Istiqlol) is reported by various Russian media, but a Tajik presidential web page gives this name to a lower peak and gives the 7134 m peak the name after Abu Ali ibn Sina (=Avicenna) (see Avicenna Peak for the other conflicting name). Consequently the previous and more familiar name Lenin Peak has been temporarily restored to this page until the situation is clarified. The peak was first climbed in 1928 by Karl Wien, Eugene Allwein and Erwin Schneider, members of a German expedition: Wikipedia

In 1404 Timur the Great ordered to build the mausoleum Guri-Emir (Tomb of Emir) for his loving grandson, Mukhammad Sultan. With time, the mausoleum became the family crypt of the Timurids dynasty. Majesty and lightness of architectural lines and shapes, richness of the multi-colored mosaic - all this makes the mausoleum a unique monument of Central Asian architecture

Charyn Canyon. Aleksander and Roman. Charyn Canyon is an 80km canyon on the Charyn River 200km northeast of Almaty close to the Chinese border. On top of these rocks are layers of much younger rocks. These red cliffs, consist of solid gravel which was deposited by debris flows. The plains around Charyn Canyon are covered with grey gravel which was deposited by rivers, and dust which was deposited by wind. Sand and gravel on the bottom of Charyn Canyon were deposited by Charyn River. Some gravel on terraces above Charyn River is evidence of Charyn's former river bed. 18.V.2003. In 1911 a huge landslide buried the village of Sarez and created the 500 m deep lake. The dam is on the left of the lake where the white rock formation touches the water. It is 600 meters high, compared to 300 m high for the world's highest man-made dam, Nurek Dam, also in Tajikistan. Scientists are worried that the dam may collapse someday, what would create a biblical-proportion flood... it could flood downstream for 1000 miles into the Aral Sea. 22.VII.1988
